50's lake boats

Lake Boats
9 x 12
oil on wrapped canvas

I am enjoying the winter sports right now leaving little time to paint. Often I can be found up the mountain skate skiing one of the many trails but yesterday I ran a ten kilometer ( 6 mile) snowshoe race and so today am looking for any excuse to sit! Perfect for a small painting where I don't have to get up and stand back to look at it. This one is done from another of my great Uncle's photos from the 50's. I was fascinated with the colors and shapes and enjoyed focusing on these aspects and not worrying too much about detail. A nice way to get back to painting after being away for a few days.

What an animal you are! I get cold just walking to my mail box. My brain cannot process running and snow at the same time. My hat's off for your remarkable athleticism and this painting. I love the idea of bringing vintage photos to life.

Wow, but you are active! The painting is lovely, I painted a composition called Boats at Baska for my grandson some years ago with a similar composition, but made all the boats either blue or white. These colours are so pleasant.

Thanks Sheila and Marie, Sometimes the workouts help relax me so I can focus and paint but other times like today I'm too wired to settle down. I think I'll root around for some more old photos though. I'm enjoying the memories they bring back.

Love these wooden boats, and the 50's colors--perfection. There are still a few of these restored beauties on Long Island. Makes me really nostalgic. You really nailed the essentials, yet you kept them each unique with it's own personality. great work.
Are you looking forward to they olympics?!
I feel like I need to rest after reading your post. lol. :-D

Thanks Liz, the colors are a nice change to my usual palette of mainly ultramarine blue! Yes I'm headed to Vancouver today to volunteer for three weeks at the Olympics. Hopefully will be doing a few paintings of some of the scenes down there but likely won't see any athletes in action. We did have the Swedish Nordic team fly by us at our local mountain this week and that was a thrill!
