Going Big

All Aboard SOLD
18 x 24
oil on wrapped canvas
Well I've decided to plunge right into a big piece and after 3 days of working on it and starting to pick at little details I decided it was time to step back, take a photo and get it on the blog. The advantage of doing this is now I can see some things that were missed - like the name of the train station! Oh well - that can be put in anytime. The biggest challenge for me on this project was avoiding making the figures look pasted on. I think I still have some work to do in this regard but for now I need to step away.

I love this! My eyes go right up to the chrome roof where the skylight is, sweep down the line of the train and then you have me swoop back up and around when I look and the lamps. I think its perfect that the figures are more suggestive to let the viewer know its a working station and not a museum with just enough detail but I like the way the focus is on the magnificent iron horse.

Lovely work! Although it is realistic, one is aware of paint and textures. I love the figures and sense of movement and sound one gets!

Thanks Sheila - it was the dome car that motivated me to paint this. As a child I traveled from the west coast of Canada to the east and back again leaving me with a nostalgia for trains. I'm glad this is what caught your eye to start with!

Thanks Marie - realistic is not normally my focus but this scene was captured by my uncle many decades ago and was crying to be painted. I'll figure out at some point how to do a realistic scene in a painterly way.

Thanks so much Marie for your compliments and for the Kreative Blogger Award! It is really wonderful to have the support of fellow artists especially when one is starting out and not feeling too confident. Thanks again,
Barb
