Here is my attempt at Karin Jurick's current Different Strokes Challenge. I began by doing a 5 value study with white and black gesso to try to develop an interesting design and once I started putting on color it was easier to keep the values that I wanted and stick to the original plan with only a few minor adjustments. I decided to add a little fun by starting with paints that I never or rarely use and of course by the end I had to sneak in a few favorites.

Love this Barbara! Especially the play betwen the blue and tan on the sides of the building. Thanks for sharing the B& W gessso study technique. I never heard of such a thing but I will have to try it!

Yes you took a common photo and turned into something alive and interesting.
Thanks Sheila. The two gessos can be mixed in varying ratios and is a great way to do a value study or even an underpainting. I'm really enjoying your work and your posts and I think sharing really helps everyone. Cheers!
Thanks Diana and David. I have to say I couldn't see much in the photo to start with but as usual it started to get real fun when the color went down - that when the playtime starts!

I'm going to have to work on my photos a bit as there is not so much blue on the originals and some other colors didn't get picked up but I had fun with this exercise. I love Karin's challenges as I always learn something being pushed into painting a subject matter that I wouldn't normally do.

Thanks Tracie and Dominique, I do have trouble pulling in the reins on color use but that is what I have the most fun with!
